Sweden Study Visa

If you’re planning to study in Sweden, you’ll need to apply for a Swedish study visa or residence permit for studies, depending on the duration of your stay. Here’s how to apply:

Determine If You Need a Study Visa or Residence Permit

  • EU/EEA Citizens: You do not need a visa or residence permit. However, if you plan to stay in Sweden for more than 12 months, you need to register with the Swedish Tax Agency.
  • Non-EU/EEA Citizens: You will need:
    • Residence permit for studies if your study period is longer than 90 days.
    • Schengen visa if your study period is shorter than 90 days.

Eligibility for a Study Visa or Residence Permit

  • You must be admitted to full-time studies at a recognized educational institution in Sweden.
  • You need proof of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay (at least SEK 9,450 per month for 10 months a year for the duration of your stay).
  • You must have health insurance if your stay is less than a year.

Gather Required Documents

The required documents usually include:

  • Letter of admission from a Swedish university or educational institution confirming full-time enrollment.
  • A valid passport (valid for the duration of your stay).
  • Proof of financial means, such as bank statements, scholarship letters, or sponsorship.
  • Proof of health insurance if your stay is less than a year.
  • Completed visa application form.
  • A passport-sized photograph.

Submit Your Application

  • The application can be submitted online via the Swedish Migration Agency website or at the Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country.
  • It’s recommended to apply as soon as you receive your letter of acceptance, as processing times can be long (typically 1-3 months).

Pay the Application Fee

The fee for a study residence permit is around SEK 1,500. This can vary slightly depending on your country of origin.

Wait for Processing

  • Residence permit for studies: It generally takes around 1-3 months for your application to be processed, so it’s important to apply early.
  • Schengen visa (for short studies): The processing time is usually 15-30 days.

Receive Your Residence Permit Card

  • If you’re applying for a stay of over 90 days, and your application is approved, you’ll receive a residence permit card. You might need to visit the embassy or consulate to provide your biometric data (fingerprints and a photo) before receiving the card.
  • For studies of less than 90 days, you will receive a Schengen visa sticker in your passport.

Move to Sweden

Once your visa or permit is approved, you can move to Sweden and begin your studies. After arriving:

  • Register with the Swedish Tax Agency if your studies will last more than a year. You’ll be given a personal identity number (Personnummer), which is necessary for healthcare, opening a bank account, etc.
  • If your studies are shorter than a year, you should have comprehensive health insurance.

Work While Studying

  • As an international student, you are allowed to work while studying without needing a separate work permit. However, you must maintain full-time student status to retain your residence permit.

Extend Your Study Permit

If your study program is extended, you can apply for a permit extension. Make sure to do this before your current permit expires.

After Graduation: Stay and Work in Sweden

After completing your studies, you can apply for an extension of your residence permit for up to 6 months to look for work or start your own business in Sweden.
